Empathy EP Run-Through

So, a quick run through all the lyrics & songs for our new EP called Empathy, coming out May 28th on Small Town Records. Pretty strange to talk about all of these words & songs for the first time. First of all, I just want to state that all of these lyrics are written by me, Martijn, on vocals. So most of them were written on the way home late at night, on my iPhone notepad app. I have the experience of writing the best lines on my way home, so I tend to keep it that way, and almost all of them reflect moments en people in my personal life. It used to be like that whenever I wrote stuff for my former band and it’s still the same in Campus. So let’s start. We’ll do this track by track. 1 to 4.

1. Empathy

The first track on the EP is the last one we’ve finished and even written for the EP. From start to finish I guess we’ve spend roughly around 12 hours in total on writing, rewriting and fitting the lyrics on it. Pretty quick job, we had to get this one done right before studio time and we’ve never got the chance to pre-record this one like we did with the other 3 songs. The lyrics are pretty easy to understand. Some people are not who they seem to be, but I guess I’m honest enough to admit truth is too hard to take.

2. Lone Wolf

The chorus was the first part that vocally came toghether, I remember that we’ve at least changed the beginning of this song 4 or 5 times to be really really repetitive. I’ve got some complete skeletons in my closet, apart from the bones of other people in there & some of them literally haunted me at night for a couple of weeks ‘till I became the lonely crossbearer. Glad I’m rid of those.

How did it come to this. I can’t handle this. So I’ll stay out. I’ll stay out alone. Another night, another dream. Always afraid that these bones would belong to me. Always afraid that these secrets would turn out to the be a noose around my neck. Another night, another dream, lone wolf, how did it come to this. 3. Downtime.

I remember we were all excited about the really heavy start and ending in this song, and our drummer Josse being all happy about the way the chorus turned out. It’s one of the heavier, but I guess the lyrics on this one are easier and a bit more straight forward. It’s easy to get what they are about. I got sick of the town I lived in, I got scared to lose someone & I was looking for a guiding light in the darkness. There you go. Happens to most of us once in a while.

I need a break from this, a break from this. This place where I live has turned me into a mess. But you’ve always seen me in another light & I’ve always been so scared, that you would leave my side. I’ve always been so scared without your guiding light. Look for the cracks in the darkness, that’s where the light comes in. I’ve always been so scared to live my days, without your guiding light. I never wanted to be walking, with living dead.

4. Young Bastard

One of the songs I like the most to play live, apart from Empathy. It’s honest, it’s hard and it’s a sing along one. It has a quick start, bit more HC and a really long ending with a lot of repeat in the vocals, it’s one you might wanna learn and pile up on. That would be great. All those things aside, I wrote this one drunk, on my way home through the rain, that’s why it’s so bitter. And yes, honestly, it’s about me.

Sentence after sentence, word after word. I’ve puzzled these phrases, but I’ve got no history. Let’s be clear upfront. Young bastard, living life on the losing end. My youth as a stone, left me to drown, left me to drown, Young Bastard. I’m alone is this world, with these scars I’ve earned. I’m Bruised and broken. I’m blue and burned.
